Reflected Geometry I
Repeating patterns, mesmerising swirls and colours have always been a design draw to me.
spiragraph anyone ?
As an art motif this idea has been perpetuated throughout the ages, as each generation of technology changes, perhaps its production method varies, but the emotional and inquisitive draw remains the same.
Over the last year or so, in physical media I have been experimenting with and enjoying pattern generative techniques.
From traditional style marbelling, to hydro dipping.
From paint suspended on ropes trailing spirals of colour over the floor, to the subtle complexity of liquid paint pouring.
How are they made?
The first stage of the process was inspired from the algorithmic coding I am learning and exploring.
I found myself wandering down the mathematical world of recursive algorithms and lissajous curves. Which are the parametric curves that a swinging ‘can of paint on a rope’ is likely to follow. Ofcourse in the real world the radius decreases as the force of the initial swing is eroded.
It wasn’t too hard to code out repeating curves using a combination of harmonics, waves and the paramatric curves, color was too hard for my coding skills (right now) so having got a base geometric… photoshop time to overlay and airbrush on base colours.
So armed with some roughly shaded patterns, it was time to reach to the power of Generative AI. In this case stable diffusion. In this case I used the AI to take the crude geometric illustrations and iterated over some (well many) prompts to generate to the image of vibrant acrylic / gauche heavy paint applied with a palette knife as a style transfer. This resulted in maybe a 1 in 20 yield of images which were exactly half of the image.
The power of these images is the absolute symmetry of the image. The geometric images were always only half way… exactly halfway. My final finishing process started with an absolute reflection in photoshop. The same way as you might for many illustrations or photographs. You are now questioning all those photographs of products you see with a reflection right? Some final colour and quality grading, for each image and the art work was ‘done’.
I felt that these were the ideal images to make into a launch edition series on KnownOrigin.io.
They look beautiful in print too, also physically available.
